Mixel has been acquired by Etsy

TuesdayJanuary 22, 2013

We're very excited to tell you that Mixel has been acquired by Etsy, the marketplace we make together.
It's a wonderful fit for the ideas and passion that went into everything we've built. Read the announcement on Etsy's blog.

This news means some changes to Mixel too. Starting with the latest version of our iPhone app, available in the App Store today, we're phasing out the social network aspect of Mixel. The unique core creativity engine remains, though: you can still pull in your pictures from just about anywhere and Mixel will automatically compose beautiful collages for you.

Once you update your app, you'll no longer have access to the social network. But don't worry, you can still access your work: the new version will let you import all of the mixels you made from our servers into our new, private gallery, built right into the app. Just login with the service you used to open your Mixel profile (either Facebook or Twitter) and we'll save them to your iPhone.

If you'd like more detail on what this means, please read the FAQs below.

Finally, a thank you for being part of the Mixel story. Many of you were with us from the very start, when we debuted with our iPad app in late 2011, and we're grateful you stuck with us through all of the twists and turns. You made it all worthwhile, and we can't thank you enough.

All the best,
Khoi, Scott, Akiva & Roy

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is the Mixel app shutting down?

No. The app will continue to be available and supported for the foreseeable future. The latest version (2.0), however, removes Mixel's social network aspect, so you will no longer be able to see what other users are making with Mixel, and of course others will not be able to see what you make (unless you share it on other social networks).

Q. Why are you removing Mixel's social network?

Going forward, the Mixel team will be focused on the many exciting challenges we have before us at Etsy. However, we still wanted to provide a path forward for Mixel users, who have produced such great work with our previous version. Because the majority of our maintenance efforts have gone towards the social network aspect of Mixel, it made sense to phase that out, thereby dramatically simplifying the upkeep of Mixel. This lets users still have access to the unique functionality, and lets us continue to improve Mixel as our bandwidth allows.

Q. What's new in Mixel for iPhone version 2.0?

Here are the highlights:

  • Same great layout engine; just tap shuffle to turn your pictures into beautiful collages
  • New square canvas, for better sharing on Instagram and other social networks
  • Grab pictures from your phone, Facebook, Instagram and now your album cover art from the Music app!
  • Brand new, beautiful user interface
  • New private gallery stores everything you make
  • Six free themes plus three premium themes, available for in-app purchase

Q. If I choose not to update to the latest version of the app, will I be able to continue using Mixel's social network?

For a limited time, yes. We intend to shut down the network in the coming weeks.

Q. Will I be able to save all of the collages I've made with Mixel?

Yes. When you update to Mixel for iPhone 2.0, you will have the option to download anything you've made with the previous version to your phone. From there, you can share it on other social networks or save it to your Camera Roll on your iOS device.

Q. Collages I made with the previous version of Mixel were landscape-shaped. Will they be turned into squares when I download them into Mixel for iPhone 2.0?

Within the app they will appear in “letterboxed” format, with a black bar above and below the collage. But when you save them to your camera roll or share them on other networks that support the landscape shape, they will appear in their original aspect ratio.

Q. Do I have to pay for Mixel now?

If you were a user of our previous version, no! You already own a license for the app, and you will retain that license going forward. For new users, we're now charging $1.99 to buy the app. For everybody, the app features six free themes. With Mixel for iPhone 2.0, we're introducing three premium themes, which can be bought via in-app purchases. Going forward, we'll be adding more premium themes, too.
